July Reading

July wasn't a great reading month, but it's Summer, there's so much other stuff to do in addition to reading.

76. Tiina Raevaara: Korppinaiset
Tämä romaani on itsenäinen jatko kirjalle Yö ei saa tulla. Päähenkilöt ovat samat, mutta tilanne on hyvin erilainen. Romaanissa käsitellään kuolemaa, kuoleman läheisyyttä, ja lintuja. Olen pitänyt näistä kummastakin romaanista todella paljon ja myös suositellut niitä sisarelleni.

77.- 78. Lois McMaster Bujold: "Penric's Demon" and "Penric and the Shaman"
Fun novellas set in Bujold's Chalion world. The first one was a reread, where young Penric gets his demon, and the second one has him seeing further adventures with a bit more experience under his belt.

79. Kelley Armstrong: City of the Lost
No part of Armstrong's urban fantasy series, this books is a crime/suspense novel set in an isolated town. The main character moves there to escape her past, but her new job as the town's deputy sheriff isn't that easy with a serial killer on the loose.

Still, not the best offering by the author.

80. Rose Fox & Daniel José Older (ed.): Long Hidden: Speculative Fiction From the Margins of History
Anthology with varying stories (as they all are), some better, some worse. I had a hard time getting into it, since none of the beginning stories grabbed me that much, but after a while, the stories got more interesting.

Another attempt at monthly updates. I'm actually at a great reading mode this year. 75 books by the end of Junes, so I might even reach 140-150 by the end of the year. But that always depends on the reading, since some books take more time and effort than others.

66. P. N. Elrod (ed.): Hex Appeal and 67. Paula Guran (ed.): Vampires: The Recent Undead
Ok theme anthologies, with some better stories and some not-so-good stories.

68. Johanna Sinisalo: Auringon ydin
Mielenkiintoinen kertomus totalitaarisesta vaihtoehto-Suomesta, jossa chilit ovat kiellettyjä. Tykkäsin.

69. Jim Butcher: Working for Bigfoot
A collection of 4 short stories with Dresden doing jobs for a Bigfoot concerned about his son.

70. Kurtis J. Wiebe, Roc Upchurch & Stjepan Sejic: Rat Queens: Volume Two: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N'Rygoth (graphic novel)
I liked the first graphic novel, I liked this one as well. In this, the Lovecraftian creatures are made to attack the town, because of an old grudge against a member of the militia. Battle, relationships, lots of background info on the characters shown in flashbacks. Great fun.

71. N. K. Jemisin: The Killing Moon & 72. The Shadowed Sun
A nice duology, where dreaming is important. Wild dreamers can affect everyone around, but a priesthood struggles to keep control of dreaming and dreamers. At great cost to themselves.

73. Joëlle Jones & Jamie S. Rich: Lady Killer
Very stylish and fun comic series of five issues, that tells the story of a 1950s housewife who is also an assassin. The company starts to go against her, so she ends up going against her handlers.

74. Juri Nummelin (ed.): Kirotun kirjan vartija: suomalaisia Cthulhu-tarinoita
Varsin kiva kokoelma kotimaisia Cthulhu-tarinoita. Vaihdellen kauhiasta koomiseen, tässä kokoelmassa on saavutettu oikeanlainen hiljaa etenevän kauhun fiilis. Tykkäsin.

75. Charles Soule & Steve McNiven: The Uncanny Inhumans: Time Crush
I used to be a big Marvel fan, but nowadays I just check out some albums from the library every now and then. This is one of those.

I love the new Ms. Marvel and read all of her, and since there were mentions to the Inhumans and the Terrigen gas, I read this. It's an okay tale of the Black Bolt and Medusa working against a time manipulating villain to regain their son Ahura against all odds.

Ok story, I need more Kamala Khan. :)

Reading, March-May

Heh, well, looks like my good intentions of updating more often this year didn't actually work out. I really need to work on that. But that hasn't stopped me from reading and I'm well on track on my goal of reading at least 100 books this year. However, since I'm at about 65 books now, I just can't be bothered to talk about all the books I've read, so I decided to go for a 'best of' -option. :)

Lucifer, the TV series. Basic info & some ranting on the latest episode (because why write an entry)

I've been watching the US TV series Lucifer mostly out of morbid curiosity and enjoyment in Tom Ellis's very captivating, highly charismatic, and very OTT portrayal of the name character. The portrayal of Lucifer as a vain and irresistable figure who has no desire to go back to Hell is true to the comics, but the decision to make this into a (buddy) cop series troubled me.

But I decided to give it a chance. Okay, in some episodes it was enjoyably bad: Tom Ellis totally chews scenery and apparently has great fun as the completely amoral main character. Mazikeen is awesome.

But after all that awesomeness we go back to the buddy cop dynamic or the cop series in general. No, no, and no. It just doesn't work. Okay, they solve some cases, he shows his scary true nature, baddies confess, case solves. Booooring.

His female partner has an old case with her accusing another cop hanging above her. Her ex is a cop as well. All other cops dislike her, but she is slowly starting to work into a reconciliation with her ex.

That's the initial setting. The latter part is going to include some MAJOR SPOILERS

January reading

I haven't been active in updating this journal for a while now. I guess at some point a few years ago, I just got burned out on reviewing and writing in general after having done that very actively for several years. It also didn't help that much of fandom moved over to Tumblr etc. which is just not suited for long text comments or in-depth analysis of books/tv/movies/whatever.

This year I decided to try to revive this journal a bit and at least try to make monthly book/media comments which shouldn't be that intimidating. So, here goes, January reading:

Books read in 2015, i.e. The Yearly Bookpoll

Last year I read less books than I wanted. I had my goal set on 100 books, at least, a figure I usually reach very easily. This year had a lot of other stuff that took my time and concentration away from reading, but I still read several very good books.

Some statistical data: 87 works read, 74 in English, 11 in Finnish, and 2 in Swedish. 32 of them were e-books and 10 were graphic novels.

Best books of 2014

I've been feeling for a while now that I could begin writing about books again, so what better way to start than to comment on the best reads of 2014. I'm not going to do any numbered listing, just comment on the most memorable reads with some silly categories.

Best YA
Janni Lee Simner's Bones of Faerie (reread) and Faerie Winter

Set in a postacopalyptic world where a war between humans and faerie damaged both worlds, and left wild magic among humans. A young girl set out to find her mother, but finds friendship, her powers, and a task of repairing things.

I haven't yet read the third book in the sequence, but it's waiting on my TBR mountain.

Karen Lord: The Best of All Possible Worlds

Okay, I didn't actually attend Åcon, but she was the GoH there this year, so I think this counts. The book is a beautiful exploration of different cultures and habits on a small world of settlers, while also showing the growth of understanding and personal relationships between the people who set out on the excursion.

Best Finnish comic
Kati Närhi: Saniaislehdon salaisuudet

Funny and quirky, and I wouldn't mind reading more.

Best non-fiction
Raisa Porrasmaa: Japani pintaa syvemmältä: Muutakin kuin sake, sushi ja samurait

Mielenkiintoinen ja varsin luettava katsaus japanilaiseen kulttuuriin.

Best new comic
Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples: Saga, Vol. 1-4

I could also name it the comic of the year or best new sf comic. A wonderful story with interesting characters, started when two soldiers from the opposing sides of a neverending war fall in love, have a child, and decide to run away.

Best novel that won all the awards Plus it's sequel
Ann Leckie: Ancillary Justice & Ancillary Sword

Yes, the first book won about all the SF awards this year and deservedly. It's an engaging read and posits interesting ideas about what a human or an individual means.

I liked AS just as much, though the setting is different and it's more about colonialism, but the main character's development is still as fascinating as in the first one. I can't wait for the final book in this trilogy!

Best feelgood fantasy
Katherine Addison: The Goblin Emperor

A young man, half goblin, half elf, suddenly becomes an emperor when his father and older brothers die. He hasn't had a happy childhood and has been mostly neglected by his father and abused by his guardian. Still, he sets out to become a good emperor and a better man than his father was and pretty much succeeds in it, despite his inexperience and forces at court opposing him.

Saddest fun read of the year
Diana Wynne Jones: The Islands of Chaldea

Left unfinished by DWJ at her death and completed by her sister, this was lots of fun and I enjoyed it a lot, but I still couldn't help feeling sad at times, since this was the last DWJ book.

Most addictive "new" series
Jim Butcher: "Dresden Files"

I've read a couple of short stories set in Butcher's world in various anthologies, but I hadn't read any of the novels before this, so I decided to check out the first three books from the library. As a result, I breezed through about all of the series in November and December (I still have one book on hold, should get it soon).

I like urban fantasy as a genre and these fit the bill. However, I'm not too keen on the later developments on the series, though I'm waiting to see where it goes with it.
